This concept encompasses efforts to minimize environmental impact, enhance operational efficiency, and support user well-being. Sustainable Facility Management is a strategic approach that integrates economic, social, and environmental aspects into facility management. With the increasing global awareness of climate change, the role of sustainable FM becomes increasingly important in supporting sustainability initiatives.

According to the Global FM Survey 2023, approximately 60% of large companies have incorporated sustainability principles into their FM policies. However, challenges in the implementation of sustainable FM remain significant, particularly in developing countries.

Fundamental Concepts of Sustainable Facility Management

Sustainable FM involves three main elements:

Optimizing building systems to reduce waste of energy, water, and other resources. Implementation examples include the use of Building Automation Systems (BAS) and the application of preventive maintenance strategies.

Efforts to reduce the carbon footprint of buildings through waste management, the use of renewable energy, and the selection of environmentally friendly building materials.

  1. User Well-Being

Improving indoor air quality, natural lighting, and thermal comfort to support the productivity and health of building occupants (ASHRAE, 2021).

Strategies for Implementing Sustainable Facility Management

  1. Utilization of Smart Technology

Smart technologies, such as the Internet of Things (IoT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI), play a crucial role in facility management.
